Introduction

You don't have to be a Hollywood set designer to become a special effects wizard. Sacal encourages you to perfect the art right in your own home! Decorative finishing techniques add an element of individual style to your painting projects. With the right touch, you'll achieve masterful deco techniques that are ready for their close-ups!

Quick and simple

Follow these 4 steps for beautiful results:

  1. Choose your decorative finish
  2. Select your colours
  3. Apply the base coat
  4. Add the glaze using the appropriate tools and techniques

Applying decorative finishes involves layering paint of different colours. Depending on the technique and tools you've chosen, you can create motifs that simulate marble, wood, fabrics, stripes, tiles, etc.

The base colour is the first layer to be applied on the surface. Before continuing, it is imperative that you let this layer dry for at least 4 hours.

The glaze mix is the second colour to be applied. It is created by mixing some of the base colour with five parts Sacal latex glaze. In order to ensure uniform results, it is essential that you prepare the entire glaze mix you will need to complete your project.

Sacal latex glaze is specially designed to be mixed with Sacal interior late x paints. And with 1,680 colours in the Sacal colour Collection, it's easy to create all kinds of decorative finishes.

For even greater depth, apply additional layers of glaze. Putting pale colours over darker colours will create a more subtle effect. Reversing this order by layering darker colours over lighter colours will have a more pronounced impact. Remember, the last colour to be applied is always the most noticable.

Time to try

To perfect your technique and sample the finish, it's best to do a test before starting the project. Using a 60 x 60cm panel, vary the quantities of glaze mix and start practicing.

A world of uses and variations

Decorative finishing techniques are not just for walls; they can give a new look to ceilings, floors, furniture and all kinds of crafts. And remember, these finishes are ideal for concealing surface imperfections.

A wide variety of methods can be used to create the desired designs. Sacal suggests five approaches that are among the most interesting, and the most popular.
